More About The Breed

Newfypoos are a cross between the devoted, big-boned Newfoundland and the Miniature or Standard Poodle. This cross creates a gentle giant that is loyal and affectionate with a generally low-shedding coat. Speaking of which, their coat may be one or two of several colors, including black, brown, gray, or “Landseer,” which is white with black markings.

With both parent breeds being very quick learners, the same is true for the Newfypoo. They pick up on things quickly and respond well to their owners, especially with positive reinforcement and fun training sessions. Because of how large they get, it is best to start training them young, especially with proper leash training.

The Newfypoo is a moderately adaptable dog breed. Because of their large size, they do not tend to be a good fit for apartment living. They are better suited to larger homes and will love running around a yard.

Because these big dogs tend to be fluffy, they tend to do better in moderate and cooler climates. As with any dog breed, they are sensitive to heat. They also do not like to be left alone for long periods of time because they bond closely with their families.

Newfypoos have a lifespan of 8-12 years. They may be apt to inherit the health issues of their parent breeds which include patellar luxation, hip and elbow dysplasia, thyroid problems, bone problems, heart conditions, and eye conditions. The health of the parents, along with the diet and lifestyle of your pup play a role in this.

Both of the parent breeds of the Newfypoo are highly intelligent, eager to please, and highly trainable. The same should be true for the Newfypoo. They tend to pick up on things quickly and tend to be a good fit for dog owners of all experience levels.

They respond best to positive training methods focused on reward and praise. Because these dogs grow to be so large, it’s important to start training and socialization as early as possible. It also wouldn’t be a bad idea to spend some time on leash training, so your Newfypoo won’t drag you around once they’re fully-grown.

Because of their size and thick coat, Newfypoos are complicated to keep groomed and may require the help of a professional. In between grooming sessions, their coats should be brushed two to three times per week. Otherwise, burrs and mattes may cause big problems. In addition to their coats, trim their nails monthly, brush their teeth weekly, and keep their ears clean and dry to avoid infection.

For best results, get your puppies used to having their feet handled and their teeth brushed early on. Make grooming a positive experience, rather than a scary one.

Newfypoos benefit from moderate daily exercise. Daily walks and playtime are important to keep their minds and bodies healthy. Newfypoos also love water, so taking them for a swim is something they might enjoy as well.

The Newfypoo’s size depends on which variation of poodle they are crossed with.
  • Standard Newfypoos weigh about 80-150 pounds and stand 22-32 inches tall.
  • Miniature Newfypoos weigh about 35-65 pounds and stand 18-21 inches tall.

A Newfypoo generally lives 8-12 years.

Although Newfypoo is the most popular name for this designer dog breed, they are also sometimes called a Newdle, Newfydoodle, Newfoundlandoodle, Newfoundlandpoo, Poofoundland, or simply a Newfoundland Poodle Mix.
